A R T I S T A

Compulsive creative and Des Moines native Richard Alvarenga is redefining all norms in the art world. You can’t put him in a single box for what he creates... Since he was a child, he has been drawing and painting. His love for art developed and matured over the years, and he ultimately settled into pursuing an Associates in photography at DMACC. Learning photography lit his flame and passion ablaze. He enjoys combining various forms of art and pursuing simplistic perfection. “Strive for perfection” he states. In a field where perfect is fluid, he hits the mark every time with his high degree of skill and expertise.

At the young age of 26, he has made waves in the industry in a short amount of time. Working as a freelance photographer at his studio has been the pinnacle of his career thus far, and working with major brands such as Pottery Barn and Better Homes and Gardens. His work can be described as simple, minimal, and clean. “Emotionally bright and dark” is his self proclaimed niche. He believes that whatever art he creates, in whatever form, should evoke a response from the viewer. His favorite work as of late is acrylic on wood, which combines photography and other interests and thus involving his community. In his artistic field it has given him the opportunity to travel to many opportunities located in San Francisco, LA, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, and Texas.

His company offered a variety mini shoots at various locations such as the Greater Des Moines Botanical garden and the Surety hotel. He has produced extraordinary features such as for Exile brewery where they captured a vintage Ferrari surrounded by the beer tanks. And while photography is his first love, he enjoys partnering in videography form also. He captured incredible f18 sailboats and hydro foilers, and also videoed with Steven Vail fine arts.

Notable work also includes capturing a photo book for James Bearden, designed and codirected by Jay Vigon.

While photography has been his full time pursuit since 2019 where he opened his own studio, he maintains making his community a priority and giving back. It started when he was younger while helping young children working at an after school program, where he would sketch for them daily in the mornings. He volunteered at his local church as an administrator coordinator, youth leader, and currently helps out as a sound engineer. His pursuit for sharing also comes in the form of distributing his projects and services free of charge, teaching others, and inspiring others. He now is a part-time adjunct professor of photography at DMACC and loves to inspire his students with the thing that puts fire in his soul. While his heart is in his childhood community, he envisions opening a gallery in a larger metro one day.

He is located in the beautiful Mainframe studios in downtown Des Moines.
